23 Years of Remembering: Manipur Never Forgets #June 18th, 23 years ago today

In 2001, on June 18th, large-scale violence erupted in Manipur. The unrest stemmed from complex political issues, including anxieties among the Meitei community regarding a ceasefire agreement between the Indian government and the Naga insurgent group, National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM). This agreement sparked fears that it could affect Manipur’s territorial integrity. Protests erupted, turning violent, and tragically leading to the loss of 18 lives.Manipur witnessed a tragedy that etched itself onto our souls. 18 precious lives were lost, leaving behind a gaping wound amidst communities.

Every year on June 18th, people in Manipur come together. Not as strangers, but as a united Manipur. They gather to remember the fallen, their dreams cut short, their families forever scarred. Lay flowers, share stories, and hold onto the memory of their vibrant lives.

This isn’t just a day of mourning; it’s a day of resilience. A day to remember the fight for peace, for a future where no mother mourns a child lost to violence.

I write share this post not to dwell on the past, but to keep the flame of hope alive. Hope that one day, the stories we tell won’t be of loss, but of a Manipur where peace reigns supreme. ️
